Utilizing RFID Technology in Autodun's Security Solutions

RFID technology is central to Autodun's security offerings, enabling wireless control of vehicle keys. It uses radio waves to exchange data between an RFID tag and a corresponding system. This contactless communication is key to Autodun's smooth operation. The RFID tags contain a microchip and antenna for signal processing and transmission.

TECHNICAL INSIGHT INTO RFID TAGS

RFID tags are categorized into two primary types: passive and active, each possessing distinct characteristics and functionalities that are strategically utilized in Autodun’s system.

  • Power Source: Passive tags do not have an internal power source. Instead, they derive energy from the radio waves emitted by an active RFID system.

  • Operation: When a passive tag comes within the operational range of an active RFID system, it absorbs energy from the incoming radio waves, powers up its internal circuitry, and then modulates the incoming radio waves to transmit its data back to the active system.

  • Use in Autodun: In Autodun, passive RFID tags are embedded in the Smart Battery Stickers and are affixed to the vehicle key’s battery. These tags are responsible for controlling the power source of the key, activating and deactivating it based on the communication with active RFID tags.

  • Power Source: Active tags possess their own power source, which is used to power the microchip’s circuitry and broadcast a signal to passive tags or other active tags or RFID readers/systems.

  • Operation: Active tags can transmit data at higher power levels and thus, over larger distances, compared to passive tags. They can initiate communication and transmit data autonomously.

COMMUNICATION MECHANISM

In the Autodun system, active and passive RFID tags communicate with each other to control the functionality of the vehicle key. The active RFID tags continuously generate and transmit a TOTP, which is received by the passive RFID tags when they come within the operational range. The passive tags validate the TOTP and, if valid, activate the vehicle key’s battery, enabling its functionality. If the TOTP is invalid or if the passive tag moves out of range and no longer receives the TOTP, the key’s battery is deactivated, disabling its functionality.

TIME-BASED ONE-TIME PASSWORD (TOTP)

In the Autodun system, the active RFID sticker generates a TOTP, which is a temporary, dynamic password created by applying a cryptographic algorithm to a unique secret key and the current timestamp. The TOTP is broadcast within a limited range, and when the passive RFID tag on the vehicle key comes within this range, it receives the TOTP, generates its own TOTP with the same secret key and compares the two. If the TOTP from the active tag is validated – the key is activated, if not – it remains deactivated.

TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

The Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP) algorithm is widely utilized in multi-factor authentication systems, providing a dynamic and secure mechanism for verifying user authenticity. TOTP generates a temporary, one-time password by applying a cryptographic hash function to a unique secret key and the current timestamp. The generated password is valid only for a short duration, ensuring that even if it is intercepted, it cannot be reused maliciously.

ALGORITHMIC FOUNDATION

TOTP is built upon the HMAC-SHA1 cryptographic algorithm, although it can also be implemented with SHA-256 or SHA-512, depending on the desired level of security and computational efficiency. The TOTP algorithm is defined in RFC 6238 and is an extension of the HMAC-based One-Time Password (HOTP) algorithm, which is defined in RFC 4226.

They adhere directly to the negative pole of your existing car key fob battery, eliminating the need for any complex modifications or installations. Once attached, they take over the role of intelligent power management, ensuring that your key fob is only powered when it's safe to do so.

What sets these stickers apart is their exclusive RFID integration. Each Smart Battery Sticker is programmed to recognize a specific, unique RFID code emitted by our Car RFID Stickers. Our Car RFID Stickers are meticulously engineered to operate in perfect harmony with our Smart Battery Stickers, offering a robust security solution for your vehicle. With an effective range that extends up to 3 meters, these stickers are optimally positioned within your car's interior, specifically near the driver's door or tucked discreetly beneath the steering column. This strategic placement ensures that your vehicle's entry and ignition systems are both effortless and secure.

The stickers are designed with a minimalist aesthetic in mind, boasting compact dimensions of just 25 x 25 mm and an ultra-slim thickness of 3 mm. Despite their small size, they pack a powerful punch. Each sticker contains a specialized RFID tag that is programmed to communicate exclusively with your Smart Battery Stickers. As you approach your vehicle, the Car RFID Stickers automatically send an activation signal to your key fob, empowering it to unlock your car and initiate the ignition process.

What sets our system apart is its fail-safe security feature: in the absence of these RFID stickers, your key fob remains completely unpowered. This ingenious mechanism adds an invaluable layer of protection against unauthorized scanning and potential vehicle theft.

Our Short Range RFID Stickers are a specialized addition to our robust vehicle security ecosystem, designed to work in perfect harmony with our Smart Battery Stickers. These petite yet powerful stickers have a reduced detection radius of up to 75 cm, making them ideal for specific use-cases that require precision and discretion.

Measuring just 12 mm in diameter, these stickers are about half the size of our standard Car RFID Stickers, yet they pack a punch when it comes to functionality. They are engineered to enable remote vehicular access and engine initiation from secure locations within your residence, such as near a window overlooking your parked vehicle. This adds an extra layer of convenience to your overall security framework.

What makes these stickers truly unique is their versatility. Due to their compact size and limited operational radius, they can be easily attached to an alternative key fob or even affixed near a window that provides a line of sight to your vehicle. Each smart battery sticker comes with two protective films on both the front and back sides. Indicators on the films guide you on which layer to peel off first and which side to adhere to the battery. The protective film makes it easy to handle the sticker and align it accurately. Once the sticker is in place, simply remove the second protective film to complete the installation.

The top of the packaging doubles as a template to assist in the precise placement of the smart sticker onto your key fob battery. The template is designed to accommodate the most commonly used battery sizes. Simply secure your car key fob's battery with the positive side facing down into the template. This ensures that you can effortlessly center the smart sticker on the battery's negative terminal for optimal performance.
